 Camagüey
is the largest of the provinces of Cuba.
Camagüey is mostly low lying, with no major hills or mountain
ranges passing through the province. Numerous large cays (including
what used to be one of Fidel Castro's favourite fishing spots;
the Archipiélago Jardines de la Reina) characterize the
southern coasts, while the northern coast is lined by Jardines
del Rey of the Sabana-Camaguey Archipelago.
Sandy beaches are found on both coasts also,
and despite a large potential for tourism, the province has
seen little development in that area with the exception of
Santa Lucía beach, on the province's North coast.

Lucía Beach
is 110 kms. (68 miles) or just a little over
an hour drive from the city of Camagüey. Protected by the
second largest coral reef in the world, Santa Lucia de Cuba
is fantastic and unique place for scuba diving and water sports.
Santa Lucia and the neighboring Cayo Sabinal, Cayo Romano, Cayo
Cruz and Cayo Guajaba, in the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago,
just offshore, host the largest colony of Roseate Flamingos
(Phoenicopterus ruber) in the Caribbean as well as a wide spectrum
of interesting Cuban coastal flora and fauna species. Also,
one of the most covetted zones of Santa Lucia de Cuba is Coconut
Beach in La Boca, which is a semi-isolated place near to a picturesque
settlement of fishermen in the very mouth of Nuevitas Bay, one
of the biggest bays in Cuba.
These 21 kms. (13 miles) of crystal clear and heavenly waters
are visited annually by thousands of people from all over the
world in their quest to bury the harsh winter in this perfect
mixture of sun and sand. So, if while walking in the morning
along the beach you find a tiny flake, do not be surprised,
is just a piece of all the winter buried here.
