Santiago
de Cuba is the second most populated province
in the island of Cuba.
The largest city Santiago de Cuba is the main administrative
center. Other large cities include Palma Soriano, Contramaestre,
Mayarí Arriba, San Luis and Songo-la Maya.
Historically Santiago de Cuba has long been the second most
important city on the island after Havana, and still remains
the second largest. It is on a bay connected to the Caribbean
Sea and is an important sea port.
The defensive system of the city concentrates its maximum interest
in the Castillo del Morro, with its Piracy
museum.
One
of the local meeting places is the Pico street,
in whose base is the Tívoli district, the heart of the
carnival. Anyone wishing to deepen in the Santiago history must
approach to the Revolution seat and the Santa
Ifligenia cemetery, catalogued as a National Monument,
with sculptures and mausoleums considered as a statuary work
of art, and where are the Jose Martí and Jose Antonio
Maceo tombs.
In the outskirts of the city are two places of inescapable visit:
the Baconao park, declared as Natural Reserve
of the Biosphere, and the sanctuary of the Cuban patron
saint, the Virgin of the Cooper Charity.
Here it’s also the beautiful and spectacular landscape
of Sierra Maestra, with its great coffee plantations.
